Cooking class! Salpicón de res y Camote enmielado

At Alebrijes Spanish Lessons, we also love building community. For our very first event, we did our favorite activity in all of Mexico: Cooking!

The dishes we prepared were Salpicón and sweet potatoes in syrup (Camote Enmielado).

Salpicón de res is a light and refreshing dish made with shredded beef, diced cucumber, tomato, radishes, onion, and avocado. All the ingredients are mixed together and dressed with a blend of lime juice and olive oil, which gives it a fresh and hydrating flavor.

Once the mixture is ready, it's served on crispy corn tostadas and eaten right away! It’s the perfect dish for hot days or warm weather places.

For dessert, we made Camote Enmielado (sweet potatoes in syrup).

This dish is very easy to prepare: First, wash and peel the sweet potatoes thoroughly. Then, boil them in a pot with just a little water, some sugar, piloncillo (Mexican brown sugar), and a bit of cinnamon.

That’s it! After about an hour, the sweet potatoes absorb all the syrup and turn a beautiful brown golden color. (Yum!)

However, they can taste quite sweet on their own, so we recommend serving them with a bit of milk. Sweet potatoes can be a little dry by themselves, but the milk helps balance the sweetness and adds a refreshing touch to this delicious dessert.

To wrap things up, we played a fun little game called Dobble. The goal is to draw cards from a pile and say the name of the images on them in Spanish. This game is one of our favorites because it helps reinforce our students’ vocabulary, and it's also a lot of fun to play in a group.

We’ll be hosting more events like this in the future, and we hope to welcome more and more students so we can share all the wonderful things our country has to offer!
